Doha: To enhance State efforts to preserve the environment, Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC) has announced to organised a number of programmes, activities and trips for students during summer.

“The centre will launch summer programmes and activities for school students under the slogan ‘Istakshif’ (explore),” said Director of Friends of the Environment Centre, Farhoud Hadi Al Hajri.

Speaking to Qatar Radio, he said that under the programme a number of environmental workshops on subjects such a cultivation and recycling will be held. “The programmes which targets young students from 10 to 18 years old aim at utilising free time of students during summer vacations. They will be provided information about environment and ecosystem of the country to enhance their skills.”

He said that the basic objective is to influence their behaviour to adopt healthy practices to protect the environment. “Field trips will be also be arranged for cleaning drives at beaches and meadows,” he added.

He said that the centre in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has been organising a number of programmes, activities, contests and drives related to environment at schools round the year.

“The activities are aimed at creating awareness among the students about the importance of environment preservation,” said Al Hajri.

He said that the centre also holds agricultural workshop for students in schools to educate them about the importance of agriculture and its impact on environment, introducing them to the local plants and their seasons.

The students are also taught about growing fruits and vegetables at home gardens.

“The centre in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change organised First Environmental Forum in the holy month of Ramadan,” said Al Hajri.

He said that the first forum was entitled ‘Environment in Qatar: Challenges and Ambitions’.

“The second forum was entitled ‘Wildlife in Qatar: Reality and Practice’. The forums hosted a number of officials, experts and environmental activists who discussed many important issues exchanged their views on environmental challenges in the country and how to preserve it,” said Al Hajri.

He said that a number of proposals were made to bring about solution for environmental challenges. “The reconditions and suggestions were sent to the authorities concerned. The forum will continue to discuss the environmental challenges in different angels,” said Al Hajri.

He said that the recommendations and proposals made in past two forums will be implemented in coordination with the authorities concerned to protect the environment.

“The center will also adopt some proposals in partnership with the authorities concerned by adding to its activities and programmes,” said Al Hajri.

Speaking about the major challenges for environmental protection in the country, he said the intensified awareness drives need to influence the behaviour of people towards the environment.

“Since throwing plastic and paper wastes at beaches and meadows, overgrazing and overhunting harm the environment, with increasing awareness among people will help reduce bad practices to preserve the environment,” said Al Hajri.
